Nathan Deakes is pictured above with 200m to go in the mens 50km Walk at the
2007 World Championships in Osaka. He produced a fine performance to
win the gold medal in a seasons best time of 3.43.53. It was Nathan's
first gold medal at a major global championship but he had already
struck gold on no less than four occasions at the Commonwealth Games.
With 50m to go Deakes suddenly burst in to tears as the realisation of
what he was about to achieve hit home.
He later commented: "As most
athletes do, you make a lot of sacrifices to get here and I was just
thinking about all those sacrifices I made. And everybody that has
helped me in my support group, with my wife, my coach, my family. The
emotion just sort of happened involuntarily. It was something that every
athlete dreams about, becoming a World champion, and the realisation
that I was about to achieve it, like I said, it just happened
involuntarily."
