The photo above shows the final of the women's 400m Hurdles at the
1999 World Championships in Seville. Daimí Pernía (left of picture)
produced a lifetime best to win the gold medal in a time of 52.89 secs, with Nezha Bidouane (657) taking silver and
Deon Hemmings (557) bronze. It marked a remarkable rise to prominence
for Pernía, who prior to 1999 had a PB of 55.51 secs. Two years later,
in Edmonton, the Cuban put up a fine defence of her title but on this
occasion it was Bidouane who took gold, with Daimí forced to settle for
the bronze medal behind Russia's Yuliya Nosova. |
