In September 2011 he set a new Ethiopian record to 1:43.37 * minutes (a world youth best) behind David Rudisha at the Rieti Meeting.
He then ended Rudisha's thirty four unbeaten run at the Notturna di Milano,
beating him by seven hundredths of a second in a time of 1:43.50 minutes.
It was his Rieti Meeting time * that he bettered in London.
