Ellen Tittel-Wellmann won the bronze medal at the European Championships
in the 1,500 and she came in 10th in 1974. She also won the 1970
European Cup and finished fifth in 1973 and 1975. In 1971 she helped to set
a new world record in the 4 × 800 m relay. At the European
Indoors she won the title in 1973, adding a bronze in 1975.
She won 38 German Championships over different distances and
was chosen as the 1975 West German Sportswoman of the Year.

Tittel was a lawyer by profession. She married two fellow Olympic middle-distance runners,
first Paul-Heinz Wellmann and a few years later Thomas Wessinghage.
With Wessinghage she had a son Daniel.
