Greg RUTHERFORD - Great Britain & N.I. - Second European long jump title.

Greg Rutherford retaining his European long jump championship - in Amsterdam.

His winning jump of 8.25m came in the fifth round when he overtook then leader

Michel Tornéus who had opened up with a leap of 8.21m (w). Greg had jumps of

8.12m, 8.13m, 8.24m and 8.12 m again. He has no jumps in rounds one and two.

Michel Torneus was leading from the first round until Greg's 5th jump.

Greg retired in 2018.

for 8th position !

Greg may have successfully defended his European title, but the following month in Rio, at the 2016 Olympic Games,

he was unable to reproduce the form he showed in London 2012 and finished third with a bronze medal.

After just qualifying in tenth place with his last jump of 7.90m the day before the final, the omens were not

good. His third round jump of 8.22 took him into the lead but then the opposition took hold. Indeed

had Jarrion Lawson's left hand not touched the sand on the America's last jump (7.78m for the hand but about 8.40

for his feet) Greg may have left Rio empty handed. Rutherford in fairness had a valid jump called foul, but

which was later given an O.K. (8.29m) - it was his last jump. His 4th attempt of 8.26m would also have won him

the bronze medal.
