The left hand photo above shows an ecstatic Kelly Holmes crossing the
finishing line to win the Gold medal in the 1500m at the 2004 Olympic
Games in Athens. Her time of 3: 57.90 was a new national record and
completed an incredible double for Kelly who had won the 800m title a
few days earlier.
In doing so she became only the third woman in history
to achieve such a feat, the previous two being Tatyana Kazankina in
1976 and Svetlana Masterkova 20 years later.
The only other Briton to
complete this remarkable achievement was Albert Hill way back in 1920!
The left hand inset picture shows Kelly confidently biding her time
towards the back of the field with around 450m to go.
