Irina is pictured above at the 2004 Olympic Games wearing the gold medal with which she
was presented after winning the shot put with an effort of 21.06m. Two days later, however
she was disqualified after failing a drugs test. It was the second time she had been disqualified
in a major competition, as she was stripped of her silver medal in the 1999 World Indoor Championships.
She later received a life ban from the IAAF in a Memorandum of September 21, 2005.
Irina refused to return the gold medal, despite the pressure of national Athletics Federation's
officials. She said she did not use stanozolol and that Russian officials gave her no help
to prove it or to defend herself.
