A happy Alex is pictured above showing off his Pole Vault gold medal at the
2006 European Championships in Gothenburg. His vault of 5.70m was 5cm clear
of his nearest challengers Tim Lobinger and Romain Mesnil, who were both
awarded the silver medal as they were unable to be seperated on the
countback rule. Averbukh's success meant that he retained the title
that he had won four years previously in Munich.
