The main photo above shows Alex crossing the line in first place in
the mens 50km Walk at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The right hand
pictures show just how much the victory meant to an emotional Schwazer,
who, in sweltering conditions, had produced an outstanding performance
to win the gold in a new Olympic record time of 3.37.09. The left hand
image shows Alex leading the field ahead of his main challengers in the
latter stages; Jared Tallent (1055), Denis Nizhegorodov (2777) and Jesus
Angel Garcia.
Schwazer was excluded from the 2012 Summer Olympics in London after an "adverse result" from a doping test. Schwazer said "My career is finished...I wanted to be stronger for this Olympics, I made a mistake". He announced his decision to quit athletics and described the result as the "biggest blow of my life". He was subsequently given a three-and-a-half year competition ban by the Italian National Olympic Committee in April 2013.

thus replicating his performance at the previous World Champs in Helsinki.

Alex is pictured above, pain etched on his face, about to cross the line in the

He produced a fine performace to win the bronze medal in a new national record
time of 3: 41.54, behind the Russians Sergey Kirdyapkin and Aleksey Voyevodin.
