The pictures above show Andrew during the final of the mens Long Jump
at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka. Howe, the 2006 European
Champion, turned in a terrific performance to win the silver medal with a
new national record leap of 8.47m. It did seem that Andrew had done
enough to win the gold, however, as his effort of 8.47m came on his 6th
and final jump.
That put him just 1cm ahead of Panama's Irving Saldino
and seemingly set for the gold medal - only for Saldino to produce the
jump of his life on his final attempt to snatch the gold back from
Andrew. Howe could only applaud the tremendous response from the
Panamanian and later commented: 'I really thought I got it, I got it, I
got it. But you never know until the end and Saladino put out a great
job.' |
