The pictures above show Maurice during the Discus, 1500m, Shot Put,
100m and High Jump disciplines of the Decathlon at the 2007 World
Championships in Osaka. Smith produced a terrific performance to win the
silver medal with a new national record total of 8644 points, in the
process recording new PBs in the 100m, 400m and Pole Vault. It could so
easily have been even better for Maurice however, his total of 8644 just
32 points back on the gold medal winner Roman Sebrle.
The turning point
proved to be the Javelin where Sebrle produced a lifetime best throw of
71.18m to amass 907 points, a massive 265 more than Smith who, hampered
by an elbow injury, could manage only 53.61m. Smith, rightly so, was
still delighted with his showing and later commented: "I feel so proud
of my performance. I came here to Osaka prepared to win a medal. I
really surprised myself with the overall results. I feel like a winner."
