The bottom row pictures above show the last couple of strides in the
final of the men's 800m at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, with
Alfred Kirwa Yego (780) and Gary Reed (428) crossing the finishing line
neck and neck. It was Yego who took the gold, holding off the challenge
of Reed by a mere 1 hundredth of a second. The top row photo shows the
athletes in the home straight with Yego and Reed leading the way.
Russia's Yuriy Borzakovskiy (second left, no. 950) won the bronze medal.
A happy Alfred later commented: "Until now, I can't believe I'm the one
who won it! I was expecting the race to be very tough because everybody
was going for victory. As we went through the first lap, it was very
easy for me and I knew I would definitely be in contention. At 600m I
was so relaxed I felt I could win, so I unleashed my last kick with 100m
to go, but I was not sure I won the gold until I crossed the line." |
