The pictures above show Virgilijus during the final of the Discus at the
2006 European Championships in Gothenburg. He won the gold medal
with a throw of 68.67m, thus completing the magnificent achievement
of holding Olympic, World and European titles concurrently. Alekna's gold
medal winning performace also meant that he had gone one better each
time at his three appearances at the European Championships,
having won bronze in 1998 and silver in 2002.
