Rutger SMITH - World & European Championship shot put silver medalist.

Rutger Smith in action at the 2012 European Athletics Championships men's shot put final (20:55m).

He also win the bronze medal in the discus  (64:02m behind Robert  Harting 68:03m and Gerd Kanter 66:53m)

thus becoming the first athlete to win medals in both events at the same European Championship.

The event took place in Helsinki, Finland where in 2005 he also won a silver medal, albeit in the far more

important World Championships, with a then put of 21:29m.


Rutger won his National Championships nine times in the discus and eight times in the shot put.

in Osaka.    Smith, who had won the silver medal at the previous Worlds, this time took the bronze,

his throw of 66.42m just 26cm behind the silver medallst, Germany's Robert Harting.

Rutger Smith  is pictured above during the final of the mens Shot Put at the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg. He finished just outside the medals in fourth place with a put of 20.90m. Smith had enjoyed a more successful time during the previous years World Championships in Helsinki, his effort of 21.29m earning him the silver medal.
