Kamila SKOLIMOWSKA - Poland - 2000 Olympic Games hammer throw champion.

Kamila Skolimowska is pictured above during the final of the women's Hammer at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka. Skolimowska, the 2000 Olympic champion, finished just outside the medals in 4th place with a throw of 73.75m.

Kamila had a disappointing Olympic Games in 2008 when she finished in last place in the final and tragically, that would prove to be her last major competition.

On 18th February 2009 she died suddenly during a Polish national team training camp in Portugal. She was just 26 years of age.

The cause of the death was a pulmonary embolism.

Shortly before her training session she felt unwell. An ambulance was called and during the trip to hospital in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, the athlete lost consciousness and efforts to resuscitate failed.
