The photo above shows Marek (898) clearing the final hurdle alongside
James Carter during the final of the mens 400m Hurdles at the 2007 World
Championships in Osaka. It was Plawgo who finished the stronger of the
two, taking the bronze medal in a new national record time of 48.12
secs, thus beating his own record that had stood for some 6 years.
Marek, therefore, became the first Polish athlete to claim a World
Championship medal in the hurdles and later commented: "I came here with
the 18th best performance, so I couldn't ever have imagined winning a
medal." That would not be the only medal that Plawgo would win at the
Championships though, as he was also part of the Polish team that won a
somewhat surprise bronze medal in the 4x400m relay.
Marek said: "We
calculated that USA, Jamaica and Bahamas are the favourites. But we
believed in luck and our team spirit. It is a great tradition in the
relay in our country. We have something special in us for this race." A
memorable World Championships then for the 26 year old Pole, who has had
to battle back from three operations on his ankle since the 2004
Olympics in Athens.

The photo above shows Marek during the heats of the men's 400m at the
2002 European Championships in Munich. He finished just outside the
medals in fourth place in the final in a time of 45.40. Plawgo later
switched from the flat to hurdles and quickly showed his aptitude for
the event by placing sixth at the 2004 Olympic Games. He then followed
up that fine performance by winning his first medal at a major
championship - a silver at the 2006 Europeans in Gothenburg. Photo 6th. August by G. Herringshaw. ©
