The main photo above shows Saif Saeed Shaheen clearing the water jump
during the heats of the mens 3000m Steeplechase at the 2005 World
Championships in Helsinki. The inset picture shows Shaheen leading the
way into the final straight and on his way to victory in the final, thus
defending the tile he had won two years previously in Paris.
The other
two athletes in shot are Ezekiel Kemboi (557) and Brimin Kipruto (622),
who finished second and fourth respectively. Kenya's Brimin Kipruto (out
of shot) won the bronze, pipping Boulami by just two hundredths of a
second.
Shaheen retired from international competition in February 2016. He cited a long-term achilles tendon injury as the cause of his retirement. Shaheen returned to live in Eldoret, Kenya to run a family business.
