The left hand photo above shows an emotional Olga Kaniskina
acknowledging the crowd shortly after she had won the gold medal in the
womens 20km Walk at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The middle
picture shows Olga just as she crosses the line whilst the right hand
image is in the closing metres. Kaniskina's time of 1.26.31 was a new
Olympic record and this terrific performance secured her second gold
medal at a major global event following her success at the previous
years World Championships in Osaka.
Olga "won" both the 2009 and 2011 World Championship 20k walk titles but was later disqualifed
from both for drug taking. However she took the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
On January 20, 2015 Kaniskina was disqualified for 3 years and 2 months starting from 15 October 2012, and all her results between 15 July 2009 and 16 September 2009, as well as between 30 July 2011 and 8 November 2011 (which include two world championship golds) were annulled. The reason for the ban was anomalies in her biological passport.

the womens 20km Walk at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka. A happy
Kaniskina later commented: "This gold is for my coach, my family and all
my relatives. My teammate Tatyana comes from the same training group.
It was a great success for Mordovia and the city of Saransk." |
