Tatyana Tomashova is pictured above during her heat of the Women's 1500 metres,
in which she finished second (4:05.10) to Abeba Aregawi (4:04.55). The final was
the slowest ever run at the Olympics. In time four of the first seven were
disqualied for taking drugs.
On 31 July 2008, Tomashova was suspended by the IAAF, along with six other
Russian track and field athletes, for doping offences. Hence her absence between
2009 and 2011. In Septembe 2024 she was banned for 10 years for more drug offences.
