The right hand photo above shows the last couple of strides in the final of the women's
1500m at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka. Yelena (845) won the
silver, her first medal at a major championship, in a time of 3.58.99,
with the gold going to Maryam Yusuf Jamal. The centre picture above
shows the athletes at the bell with Soboleva and Jamal matching each
other stride for stride, whilst the left hand photo shows Yelena during
the heats.
She was later disqualified for taking drugs.
On 20th. October 2008, it was announced that Soboleva, along with six other Russian athletes received a two-year doping bans for manipulating drug samples. The ban would come into effect from April 2007, when the samples were given for testing.
In February 2008 she had established a new world indoor record of 3:58.05 seconds in a race in Moscow and in March 2008 she beat her own world record in Valencia.
