The larger photograph shows Asli winning her semi-final in 4:05.11 and the two smaller inset
photos the finish of the Final and Asli's celebration upon winning. It was the slowest ever Olympic 1,500m
final since the event was introduced in 1972 (Munich). Her best time was 3:56.62 which she
set earlier in the year. She had also won the European 1,500m in Helsinki a few weeks before (see below).
In 2015 she was stripped of her gold medal for doping. An appeal by world governing body the IAAF was
upheld after the 29-year-old was cleared in Turkey. She was banned for eight years.
She also lost her European "title". Her competitive results obtained since July 2010
were also erased after abnormal values were found in blood samples.
Alptekin served a two-year ban after a positive test as a junior in 2004.
