Joanna HAYES - U.S.A. - 2004 Olympic Champion. 2005 World Champs crash.

The sequence of pictures above show the closing few metres of the womens 100m Hurdles final at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki. Sadly for Joanna she clipped the penultimate hurdle and then went tumbling through the final hurdle to bring her race to a crashing end. As the photo above shows, Hayes, the 2004 Olympic champion, had every chance of winning a medal before that bitterly disappointing ending. Michelle Perry (lane 3) won the gold, Delloreen Ennis-London (far left) the silver and Brigitte Foster-Hylton (centre, in yellow) the bronze. In qualifying from her semi-final Joanna had run 12.76 secs, which was the very same time that the silver and bronze medalists clocked in the final.

The top picture above shows Joanna Hayes (lane 4) racing towards victory in the final of the 400m hurdles at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. The empty lanes alongside her are where the two fallen athletes were running, favourite Perdita Felicien falling at the first hurdle and bringing down the Russian Irina Shevchenko. Joanna's time of 12.37 secs was a new Olympic record, eclipsing the previous best of 12.37 set by Bulgaria's Yordanka Donkova, Bulgaria at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
