In March 2017, Shalane's 2008 Olympic bronze medal in the 10,000 meters was upgraded to silver after

Elvan Abeylegesse had her silver medal stripped due to a positive result for banned substances found

in a retroactive test

In 2011 Shalane made her marathon debut finishing second ij The New York marathon with a time of 2:28:40.

It was the best finish for an American woman in twenty years at the New York City Marathon.

Flanagan captured the U.S. Marathon championship in the race.

On September 28th 2014, Flanagan placed third in the Berlin Marathon, with a personal best of 2:21:14. 

In 2017 won the New York marathon Marathon title (2:26.53), the first American to do so since Miki Gorman in 1977.

In 2018 she came third 2:26.22 (won by Mary Keitany 2:22.38).
