Craig Serjeant could, as the Australian selectors expected, have become
one of the top batsmen to wear the baggy green cap in the 1980s had he
not been thrown into the turmoil of the start of World Series cricket
and the recession of the top players. As it was he found himself having
to deal with responsibilities he should not have faced until much later
in his career. In fact he did a reasonable job of taking over as the
powerhouse of the batting of the new-look Australian Test side, but a
brief blip in his form for Western Australia at the start of Mike
Brearley's England tour of 1978-79 saw him discarded from the
international side, never to return. Serjeant proved himself a sound
stroke-player, hitting through the line of the ball, at the start of the
1977 tour of England. He made 159 against Nottinghamshire and 46 in the
first ODI in Nottingham, followed by 81 in the Jubilee Test at Lord's.
He made only 14 and 8 at Old Trafford and was then dropped. Many thought
the selection panel was disdainful of his talents because he was one of
the few members of the side who had not been contracted to World
Series. He returned in Bobby Simpson's team which played India in
1977-78, not succeeding until the third test when he made 85 at the MCG.
In West Indies in the spring of 1978 he made 3 and 40 against Roberts,
Croft and Garner, then 124 in Guyana when the West Indian first team had
been dropped. That was a match-winning innings in which he added 251
with Graeme Wood to give Australia an unexpected three wicket victory
after being set to chase 362. He then made 49 in Trinidad and 26 and 32
not out in Jamaica in what proved to be his last Test. (Bob Harragan) |
