Gary Cosier was a hard-hitting middle order batsman who played
destructively in Australia's middle order in the mid-1970s, but could
not respond to the responsibility thrust upon him when most of the
senior players defected to World Series cricket. Cosier, originally
playing for Victoria, made his Test debut in 1975-76 soon after moving
to South Australia. He made 109 in his second Test against the West
Indies. In Adelaide in 1976-77 he and Rod Marsh blocked out a draw
against Pakistan when Australia went into the last hour needing 56 to
win. They ended up just 24 short with four wickets in hand. Cosier made
up for that by scoring 168 in the next Test and sharing a partnership of
171 with Greg Chappell.
He toured New Zealand in 1976-77 and the
following year moved to his third State side, Queensland. In the
Centenary Test he batted at number three and scored just 10 and four,
then lost his place during the England tour of 1977. He returned to the
much-depleted Australian team under the captaincy of Bobby Simpson in
1977-78, scoring 64 and 34 in the third Test in Melbourne and 68 in
Sydney. He toured West Indies, but after scoring 1 and 0 in the first
Test against Mike Brearley's team in 1978-79 he was dropped. He was part
of Australia's World Cup squad in 1979, his only notable performance
being 3-54 with his medium pace against Pakistan at Trent Bridge,
Nottingham. (Bob Harragan)
