Tim Robinson's test career may have finished as unexpectedly as it
started, but in his few years at the top he showed a voracious appetite
for runs. He never expected to find himself opening for England's tour
of India in 1984-85 under the captaincy of David Gower. He had planned
to work for Nottinghamshire's commercial department that winter and even
when he was chosen for the tour Yorkshire's Martyn Moxon was expected
to be in the Test side. The death of Moxon's father changed all that and
Robinson found himself blinking in the dust of the Indian Test grounds,
regularly putting eye drops on his contact lenses: very regularly in
Delhi where he made 160, followed by 74 at Madras and 96 in Kanpur. He
was part of the England run feast in the 1985 Ashes series, scoring 175
at Headingley, 77 at Trent Bridge and 148 at Edgbaston. A poor series in
West Indies in 1986 - top score 43 - saw him dropped until the first
Test against Pakistan in 1987, when he returned with 166. He batted down
the order in Pakistan that winter and was dropped, only to return with
43 in the Australian Bicentennial Test. In New Zealand he made 70 in
Christchurch and 54 in Auckland. The return of Graham Gooch cost him a
place against West Indies in 1988. He returned briefly in the fourth
Test against Australia in 1989, scoring just 0 and 12, after which he
was replaced by Michael Atherton. Robinson played in the 1987 World Cup,
scoring 55 against Sri Lanka in Poona, but being lbw to Craig McDermott
for 0 in the final. (Bob Harragan) |
