Seam bowler Chris Pringle went with friends to Headingley to watch a one
day international between New Zealand and England - and found himself
playing. New Zealand were already hit by injuries, with Danny Morrison
and Jonathan Millmow out of action, so when Martin Snedden was taken ill
on the morning of the match they lost no time in asking Pringle if he
had brought his kit. In 1989 he had been breaking records for Stroud in
the Western League and in 1990 had started in similar vein in the
Bradford League. His emergency efforts got him a trip to Pakistan in
1990-91 and he made his debut in Karachi. In Faisalabad he took 7-52 and
4-100. His debut in New Zealand was against Sri Lanka in Wellington. In
1991-92 he took 3-127 against England in Christchurch. After a spell
out of the Test side he returned against Pakistan in Christchurch in
1993-94, when he also played against India. He played at Lord's and Old
Trafford on the 1994 tour of England, but only took three wickets in the
series. On the South African tour of 1994-95 he played in the Tests at
Durban and Cape Town. Against Sri Lanka at Dunedin in the same season he
took 3-51. Pringle, medium fast with a somewhat uncoordinated action,
made his first class debut for Auckland in 1989-90. In the only ODI on
the 1994 tour of England he took 5-45. He also took 4-27 against Ireland
in Comber. (Bob Harragan) |
