John Morrison pictured in 1975 by G. Herringshaw. ©
The batsman his team-mates called 'Mystery', John Morrison came into the
New Zealand side just as it was beginning to win matches for the first
time. He drew the selectors attention by scoring 180 not out for
Wellington against Northern Districts in 1972-73, and was chosen to go
to Australia for the first cross-Tasman series for 27 years. In the
first Test he scored 44 at number six then moved up to open the innings
when Glenn Turner was injured. He opened again in the second match,
scoring 28 and 117, then went down to number three for the final match,
in which he made 40. When the Australians came to New Zealand for the
return series his best score was 66 at Wellington, during which he
shared a century partnership for the second wicket with Turner. Playing
England in 1974-75 he scored 58 in both innings at Wellington, but in
the next Test in Christchurch got a duck when he edged the first ball of
the match, bowled by Geoff Arnold, straight to Mike Hendrick at slip.
Morrison took part in the long tour of India and Pakistan in 1976-77,
and had scores of 46 and 31 when India toured New Zealand. He never
played in a Test series in England, but visited the country for two
World Cups. In 1975 he scored 55 against England at Trent Bridge, and
played in the semi-final in 1979. He became a commentator on domestic TV
in New Zealand, being noted for his dry sense of humour. (Bob Harragan) |
