Alvin KALLICHARRAN - West Indies - Test Profile 1972-81

Only 5ft 4in and of Indian stock, Alvin Kallicharran showed the courage and indomitability of the little man in international cricket, no more so than in his spectacular attack on the bouncers of Dennis Lillee at the Oval in the 1975 World Cup. The previous night Kallicharran and Rohan Kanhai had been sipping lager next to a harder drinking Lillee and Thomson. "Lillee said to Rohan: "Now then Master, where are you going to hit me tomorrow, " Kalli recalled. "I'm not batting. This little so-and-so is going to take you apart, " said Rohan. "When I was taking guard I remembered what Rohan had said to this man and I thought "Oh, My God!" It just happened that day I played as well as I ever played." He played pretty well at other times. He was already on the Warwickshire staff when he made his debut against New Zealand in 1972, scoring 100 not out at Georgetown and 101 in Trinidad. He made a pair of 80s at the Oval in 1973 and 158 in Trinidad in 1973-74, being reinstated on 142 when Tony Greig ran him out after the end of play. In 1977-78 he was the only senior player not to join World Series and was made captain of a team of reserves, scoring 92 and 126 against Australia and 187 in Bombay. He later toured South Africa with the rebel West Indies side, scoring 82 against South Africa at Cape Town and 103 in Durban. In later years he played for Herefordshire and alongside his son Rohan at Gloucester City. (Bob Harragan)
