Photo of Winston Benjamin taken by G.H. on 26th. February 1994 in Kingston, Jamaica.

The only word to sum up the cricket of Antiguan Winston Benjamin is 'languid'. Whether as a hard-hitting batsman or as a fast-medium bowler bordering on outright fast he always gave the impression he was toying with the opposition. Lesser mortals had to work at their game. To Benjamin it came naturally. He particularly liked hitting straight sixes over the bowler's head. His flashes of brilliance left many feeling he could have done so much more at Test level, but in the end he was a bit-part player to the greats. Probably his best series was when Pakistan visited the islands in 1988. He took 5 wickets in an innings and scored 31 and 40 not out in Barbados. Benjamin played in the World Cups of 1987, where he took 3-69 against Pakistan at Karachi, also in 1992, when his best figures were 3-27 against Zimbabwe. He toured England, Australia, Pakistan and India and took part in numerous ODIs in competitions in Sharjah. In England in 1988 he took five wickets at Headingley and had figures of 4-52 at the Oval. He was in the West Indies side for the England tour of 1995. He played in ODIs but did not feature in a Test match. Benjamin made his debut for the Leeward Islands in 1985-86 and played English county cricket for Leicestershire from 1986, often batting as high as number six. He also played for Cheshire in 1985.
