Scott PARKER - Chelsea FC - Biography of his football career at Chelsea.

The protracted saga of Scott Parker's transfer from Charlton Athletic to Chelsea would prove to be just the beginning of a two-year period of frustration for the midfield dynamo. The ball-juggling, childhood star of McDonalds' pre-1994 World Cup advertising campaign, Parker had developed into one of England's finest young midfielders when, in the summer of 2003, terms were agreed for the Lambeth-born player to leave The Valley for Stamford Bridge. Sadly for Scott - who had already spent a hefty lump of his expected signing-on fee on an Aston Martin - the move was put on hold after Roman Abramovich bought the Blues, who then chose to spend their money on big-money signings from around the world.

However, with some of the new boys struggling to fulfil expectations, the deal for Parker was resurrected during the mid-winter transfer window, and the following January he finally sealed his dream move when Chelsea paid £10m for the man who was by now a full England international. Strangely, Scott made his Blues debut in an unfamiliar role on the right flank in a 3-2 victory at Blackburn, and scored his first (and only) goal for the club in his next appearance, as Chelsea won 2-0 at Portsmouth. As the 2003/04 season progressed, Parker undoubtedly impressed the club's supporters with his tough-tackling, energetic performances, but manager Claudio Ranieri seemed less convinced, selecting the midfielder in his starting line-up on only seven occasions, and regularly playing him out of position.

It was, therefore, something of a surprise when Scott was voted the PFA Young Player of the Year ahead of his skipper, John Terry, at the end of the campaign. Holding midfielder Claude Makelele had failed to convince during his first season in London and many observers felt Parker deserved to replace the French international in that position prior to the 2004/05 campaign, but as Makelele raised his standards spectacularly with an imperious season at the heart of the battle, Scott again found himself out in the cold.

To make matters worse, a broken bone in his foot led to a lengthy spell on the sidelines and to add insult to injury (literally), a hurried attempt to return to fitness backfired when the break reoccurred, bringing Parker's season to an early conclusion. A victim of much misfortune during his time at Stamford Bridge, Scott Parker opted to leave London for Tyneside in the summer of 2005, joining Graeme Souness' Newcastle United for a fee of £6.5m.
