Peter DAVENPORT - England - His 1985 England appearance.

Peter Davenport is in the select band of England players whose one and only appearance for his country was as a mere substitute. He was a form striker with Nottingham Forest at the time and therefore justifiably called up by Bobby Robson for a friendly against the Republic of Ireland in March 1985 (see photo above). Davenport came on for Mark Hateley and spent his limited period on the Wembley pitch as a partner for another form striker from the Midlands, Gary Lineker, who was making his first start for his country and winning only his second cap. The subsequent paths of the two couldn't be more contrasting - Lineker moved to Everton and became the world's most feared goalscorer; Davenport moved to Manchester United and saw his career slide downwards so swiftly that he wasn't considered by Robson again.
