One of the many things for which Alf Ramsey's final game as England coach was famous was the number of debutants who featured. The 1974 friendly in Portugal, which ended goalless, showcased no less than half a dozen new international careers, with Burnley's mountainous midfielder Martin Dobson among them. Ramsey's departure initially curtailed Dobson's subsequent claims, with temporary replacement Joe Mercer opting for more experience for the summer Home Internationals, but an on-song Dobson returned for the close season tour of Eastern Europe when other teams were playing at the World Cup, and he started - and ended - all three undefeated games in East Germany, Bulgaira and Yugoslavia. A move to Everton followed (Martin is pictured above in action for the Toffees) but the fact that he was now playing for a bigger club did nothing for his chances at international level. Dobson was cast aside after helping England beat Czechoslovakia 3-0 at Wembley in the first qualifier for the 1976 European Championships in what proved to be the first of a number of Revie eccentricities in the job. At 26 years of age he was at his peak but was never asked back. (Matthew Rudd) |
