Steve Whitworth' England Football Career.
A solid and reliable defender in a well-organised Leicester City outlet through the 1970s (he is pictured above playing for the East Midlands club in the year of his call-up), Steve Whitworth's seven caps for England, all in 1975, came with Don Revie struggling to fill the right back role with a more experienced defender after deciding to ditch Emlyn Hughes entirely. Whitworth's debut came in a 2-0 win over world champions West Germany - a high point of Revie's tenure - and he played in six of the next eight matches, earning his final cap in the decisive 1-1 draw against Portugal in Lisbon which eliminated England from contention for the following summer's European Championships. The following year saw the debuts of Trevor Cherry, Dave Clement and, most significantly, Phil Neal, who ultimately would cure the right back issue for the long term. Whitworth continued his more than respectable club career, having shown a brief but capable transition to the international game. (Matthew Rudd) |
