Neil WEBB - Manchester United - 1989-92

Neil Webb joined Manchester United in the summer of 1989 for a tribunal-set fee of £1, 500, 000 from Nottingham Forest following four successful years under the tutelage of Brian Clough. By then a regular England International, he came with a reputation for perceptive passing and an eye for goal. He demonstrated this on his debut with a superb strike from 20 yards in a 4-1 win against defending League Champions Arsenal on the opening day of the season. However, following only three further appearances, he ruptured his Achilles tendon whilst playing for England against Sweden and was out until March 1990 as a result. Webb returned to first team action as a substitute in a 2-0 win at Southampton and went on to play a key part in United's FA Cup Final success, scoring in a 3-3 semi-final draw with Oldham Athletic and helping the Red Devils to a 2-1 victory in the replay at Maine Road. The final against Crystal Palace produced a thrilling 3-3 draw and in the replay it was Webb's fine pass that set up the decisive goal for Lee Martin. The 1990/91 season was, in large, injury free, as he remained a permanent fixture during the League campaign until March. Significantly, however, he was substituted at Wembley in the shock League Cup Final defeat against second division Sheffield Wednesday later that month and didn't take part in the European Cup Winners' Cup Final victory against Barcelona at the end of the season. The following season followed a similar pattern and, again, by the end of it, he was no longer commanding a regular position within the team. Despite his continuing England career, Webb's days at Old Trafford were numbered. A much-publicised dispute with Sir Alex Ferguson meant the inevitable was not far away. He was sold in November 1992 back to Nottingham Forest for £800, 000 just as Eric Cantona arrived. (Steve Drabble)
