Craig Russell's parents are huge Sunderland fans and the South Shields born
striker claims that he was conceived following the FA Cup final victory
of 1973! Given his background it is no surprise that he joined
Sunderland despite interest from the likes of Manchester United. Craig
worked his way up through the ranks to the first team and was a regular
for four seasons between 1993/94 and 1996/97. He moved on to Manchester
City in November 1997 in an exchange deal with Nicky Summerbee valued at
£1 million.
