Republic of Ireland international David Kelly joined Sunderland in
September 1995 for a fee of £900,000 from Wolverhampton Wanderers, a
figure which rose to £1 million following the Black Cats promotion at
the end of his first season with the club. A regular goalscorer for most
of his previous clubs, David struggled to find the net during his time
on Wearside and moved on to Tranmere Rovers in the summer of 1997 for
£350, 000, having scored just 2 goals in 34 league games. He is pictured
above during the match against Chelsea on 16/3/1997.
