Norway international Oyvind Leonhardsen became the latest member of
Tottenham Hotspur's Scandinavian revolution when he made the £3m move
from Liverpool in August 1999, joining compatriot Steffen Iversen and
Denmark's Allan Nielsen. Able to play anywhere across the midfield,
Leonhardsen was famous back in Norway for his relentless running and
clever movement, traits which led to the coining of the phrase 'Leo
run.' Leonhardsen didn't take long to show he could also score goals.
His late equaliser against Everton in August set up a grand stand finish
in which Iversen grabbed an eventual later winner. It was the first of a
handy six goals in all competitions for Oyvind, including a crisply
struck left-footed winner at Sheffield Wednesday in the very next game,
and the first in a 3-0 home victory over Zimbru Chisinau in the UEFA Cup
in September. Leonhardsen helped Spurs to top spot after three wins in
the first four games, but a lack of invention - David Ginola aside - saw
them finish the season in 10th place.
In 2000-01, early season strikes against Middlesbrough in the league
and Brentford in the League Cup suggested a fruitful season to follow.
However, Oyvind enjoyed mixed fortunes, never more so than in a 3-1 home
win over Derby County in October. After hitting a brace, he left the
field with an injury that would keep him out for the next two months. He
returned to get on the scoresheet in the FA Cup 4th round at Charlton
Athletic in February, as Spurs recovered from 2-0 down to complete a 4-2
triumph. In the next round against Stockport County, the Norwegian was
the victim of a dreadfully timed tackle that put him out for much of the
remainder of the campaign, his misfortune compounded by the fact that
Spurs were coasting to a 4-0 win. Leonhardsen was one of several notable
absentees as an injury-hit Spurs side were beaten by Arsenal in the
semi-finals. With their cup dreams over, Tottenham again had to settle
for a mid table finish.
Although he'd been an important component of the team's engine room
under George Graham, the injuries took their toll and Leonhardsen became
a squad player under new manager Glenn Hoddle. Oyvind made only seven
appearances in 2001-02 before being allowed to join Aston Villa on a
free transfer on 30th August 2001. (Alex Voskou)
