David Knox's career is one of the stranger ones
at international level. He made his debut as a 22
year old against Fiji in 1985 only to be cast into
the international wilderness for 5 years - missing
34 games - before returning against the USA in
July 1990. Knox then disappeared for a further 33
Tests over a 4 year period before returning to the
fold in a 73-3 win against Western Samoa in August
1994. He played the next international against New
Zealand before being discarded once again, this time
missing 15 internationals over two years. David was
back again in 1996 - this time playing 3 consecutive
games for the first time. He then missed 6 more
games before finishing his international career with
a run of 5 consecutive matches in 1997. There
probably isn't another player to have played
international rugby for 13 years and won less than
the 13 caps that David Knox has to his name. His big
misfortune was that his career coincided with Michael
Lynagh, one of the greats of the game, and had that
not been the case David would surely have many more
caps to his name.)
