Maryam Yusuf JAMAL - Bahrain - Fifth in the 800m at the 2005 World Champs (result)

Maryam Yusuf, who was born in the same Ethiopian village as the great Haile Gebresellasie but now represents Bahrain, is pictured above during the heats of the 1500m at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki. Jamel qualified comfortably for the final by winning her heat but could only finish sixth in the final after being obstructed by Yuliya Chizhenko, who went on to finish second. Chizhenko was later disqualified meaning that all athletes bar the winner Tatyana Tomashova moved up one position. That meant that Maryam Yusuf finished fifth, although that was no doubt scant consolation for Jamal who was one of the pre-race favourites.
