Following her silver medal at the 2016 European Athletics Championships Mirela Demireva
traveled to Rio de Janeiro the next month to contest the Olympic title and returned to
Bulgaria with another silver medal, plus a new PB of 1.97 metres. In Rio, with only one
failure leading up to 2.00 metres (which none of the women cleared), she beat 2007
and 2009 World Champion Blanka Vlašić and only an error free display by Ruth Beitia
possibly stopped her from winning.
