The pictures above show Venelina during the final of the women's High
Jump at the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg. She produced a
superb performance to win the silver medal with a championship record
equalling leap of 2.03m. That jump of 2.03m put her level with Belgium's
Tia Hellebaut at the head of the field but when neither athlete was
able to improve the record Hellebaut took the gold on the coutback rule.
The medal was the 32 year old Venena's first at a major championship
although she had gone so close back in 2001 at the World Championships,
missing out on the bronze to Kajsa Bergqvist on the countback rule. In
Gothenburg it was to be Veneva who got the better of Bergqvist, the
Swede forced to settle for third place with a clearance of 2.01m.
