The pictures above show Roman during the Long Jump, Discus and Shot Put
disciplines of the Decathlon at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka.
Sebrle, the reigning Olympic champion, struck gold at the Worlds for the
first time, having won the silver medal at the previous two
Championships in Paris and Helsinki. It was a tight finish though,
Roman's total of 8676 points - which included a new PB in the Javelin -
leaving him just 32 points clear of the fast improving Jamaican Maurice
Smith. A happy Sebrle latter commented: "That was a crazy competition
with so many ups and downs. After the pole vault, I was thinking 'it
will be bad'. After the javelin again 'good'. But I could not be sure
before the 1500m, so I tried to control the race and go with Maurice and
Dmitry." He added: "This is the toughest of all my titles." This World
title completed the 'full set' for Roman, having won gold at the 2004
Olympics and 2002 & 2006 European Championships. With this success
he also became the first man since Sergey Bubka (86-88) to
simultaneously hold the Olympic, World and European titles. |
