Hartwig GAUDER - East Germany - Olympic, World & European 50km Walk Champion.

Hartwig Gauder wins the gold medal at the 1987 World Championships for East Germany

in the men's 50k race walk. In 1990 and 1991 he won the bronze medal at both the

World Championships and European Championships for Germany.

In 1996 Gauder started suffering from a virus infection of his heart.

After living with an artificial heart for several months, he received a heart transplant. 


His recovery from almost dying to returning into a normal life was covered in a

film shown on German documentary channel Phoenix.


He took part in the New York Marathon several times after his operations.
