A delighted Tirunesh is pictured above crossing the line, arms outstretched in triumph,
to win gold in the 5000m at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki, in a new
Championship record time of 14: 38.59. Meseret Defar won the silver and Ejegayehu Dibaba,
younger sister of Tirunesh, completed an Ethiopian clean sweep of the medals. The fourth
Ethiopian in the field, Meselech Melkamu, finished in fourth place, highlighting the great
strength in depth of Ethiopian distance running. The 5000m gold completed an
outstanding Championships for Dibaba who a week earlier had won gold in the 10000m.
