Renaud LAVILLENIE - France - Silver medal at 2013 World Championships in Moscow.

Olympic and European Champion Renaud Lavillenie clears 5.89m on his third attempt but

Rapael Holzdeppe, on his first attempt, had already vaulted it.

Neither was able to vault higher and so the German, with fewer failures, was declared the Champion.

Consolation of sorts came just over six months later on Saturday 15th February 2014, when Renaud broke the World Indoor pole vault world record at the Pole Vault Stars European Athletics Permit Meeting in Donetsk, Ukraine.

The Frenchman cleared 6.16m, at his first attemp and then tried to vault even higher but failed once at 6.21m before calling time on his remarkable day.

“To go over at 6.16m on the first attempt is just pure pleasure, it will surely take a while for me to come back down to earth,”  he said.

Earlier in the contest, he made it over 6.01m with his third attempt !

The previous outdoor world record of 6.14m was set by Sergey Bubka in 1994 in Sestriere, Italy, while the indoor world record 6.15m was set in Donetsk by Bubka in 1993.

Lavillenie was congratulated by Sergey Bukba, a native of Donestk, who was watching in the stands.
