Richter won her first international title under her maiden name Irrgang, becoming 1971 European Champion
in the 4x100 and placing second in that event in 1974. In 1973 she was European Indoor Champion in the
60 metres and in the 4×1 lap relay. She earned 28 national titles and set several world records.
She retired in 1977 but returned in 1979 and was nominated for the fictional West German team for the
1980 Moscow Olympics, but did not start due to the US-led boycott and subsequently retired.
