The main photo above shows Kelly Sotherton contemplating what might
have been after the final event, the 800m, of the Heptathlon at the 2005
World Championships in Helsinki. Kelly had just produced a superb
performance in that 800m, clocking a new PB time of 2: 07.96, but it was
not enough to lift her into the medal positions and she finished 50
points behind the bronze medallist Margaret Simpson. Sotherton had
looked in good shape after five events and was sitting in the bronze
medal position before a hugely disappointing performance in the Javelin
gave her a mountain to climb. That brave effort in the 800m saw her go
close, but not close enough, and she was unable to add a second bronze
to the one she had captured at the previous years Olympic Games. The
inset pictures show Kelly in the 100m Hurdles, celebrating a clearance
in the High Jump and asking for quiet in the Shot Put ! |
