Matthew Hudson-Smith leads the men's 400 metre finalists down the finish straight
to become the 2018 European Champion. His winning time of 44.78 was a fraction
slower than his winning time in the first semi-final - 44.76. In fact every one of the
finalists was slower in the final than their semi-final. Ever consistent Matthew
clocked 44.75 when winning the silver medal four years earlier.

On 28th May 2022 he broke Iwan Thomas's 1997 UK 400m record with a time of
44.35 in Eugene, Oregan, U.S.A. (44.38 previous record)

Matthew crosses the finish line, with his eyes on the Stadium's big screen. He
admitted he started the final too fast and was slowing down more than he wanted
as the race came to an end.
