Priscilla Welch is pictured above punching the air in delight after
crossing the finishing line in a highly creditable sixth place in the
inaugural women's Marathon at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Remarkably,
Welch had only taken up running at the age of 35 and she was only a few
months shy of her 40th birthday during the 1984 Games.
Priscilla also
represented Great Britain at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.
Other
highlights included victories at the 1983 Enschede Marathon, 1984
Columbus Marathon and 1987 New York City Marathon.
She also had second
place finishes in the 1984 & 1987 London Marathons, third place in
the 1983 New York City Marathon, third in the 1986 Chicago Marathon and
fourth place in the 1988 Boston Marathon.
Welch continued to run until 1992 but a bout of breast cancer curtailed her career.
